Data reported by SIMalliance shows that the collective SIM shipments of its members in 2017, which represented approximately 88% of the global SIM market, equalled 4.9 billion units. In related NFC Forum news, the NFC Forum Consumer Electronics Special Interest Group (SIG) was renamed the IoT Special Interest Group to more accurately describe its future charter and direction.
Two billion NFC-enabled devices will be in the global market by the end of this year, and this number is expected to grow to almost 40 billion connected devices by 2020. The new white paper describes how consumers can benefit from using NFC as an intuitive interface for devices that lack traditional user interfaces like a keyboard or screen. NFC's unique "single tap" interface provides a unified and reliable IoT experience in the smart home.
